A Centrepiece Soft Coral
Toadstools (Sarcophyton spp.) are genuinely one of the best corals in the hobby. They grow into impressive specimens, polyps fully extended and swaying in the current. They're often the first coral visitors notice in a tank.
Basic Requirements
- Light: Moderate — PAR around 100-200 at the coral is the sweet spot
- Flow: Moderate to strong. Enough to keep the cap clean and polyps moving, but not a direct blast
- Placement: Mid-tank with room to grow. A small frag can easily reach 20-30cm across
- Parameters: Standard reef. They're forgiving of minor swings that would stress SPS
The Shedding Cycle (Don't Panic)
This is the biggest source of toadstool panic posts online:
- The toadstool retracts its polyps completely
- The cap develops a waxy, mucus-like coating
- It looks terrible for 3-7 days
- The coating peels off
- Polyps extend and it looks better than ever
This is completely normal — it's how toadstools clean themselves. Don't move the coral, don't peel the coating, don't assume it's dying. Just wait. If it's been more than two weeks with no polyps and no visible shed cycle, then investigate.
Why Is It Not Opening?
If it's not a shed cycle, check:
- Recent move? They sulk for days or weeks after relocation
- Flow too strong? Retraction is the response to being battered
- Allelopathy? Chemical warfare from nearby corals. Give it space
- Water quality? Check ammonia, nitrite, salinity, temperature
- Lighting change? They need time to acclimate
The Chemical Warfare Factor
Toadstools produce terpenes that can inhibit nearby coral growth, particularly SPS. In a mixed reef, run activated carbon continuously and do regular water changes.
Getting Started
A toadstool is one of the best centrepiece softies available — affordable, hardy, and grows into an impressive specimen. They ship well and settle quickly.
How big has everyone's toadstool grown? Always interesting to hear about the units that started as tiny frags.
