eBay for Fish: Does It Actually Work?
For anyone selling marine fish — whether breaking down a tank, rehoming, or selling captive-bred stock — eBay UK is the obvious first thought. But is it a good fit for live marine fish?
The eBay Situation in 2026
eBay UK removed private seller fees in October 2024, which is good news for hobbyists. No more 12.8% final value fee on private sales.
But fees aren't the only issue:
- No livestock infrastructure — searching "clownfish" returns toys, phone cases, and bedding alongside actual fish
- No specialist feedback — 500 reviews for phone cables says nothing about fish packing skills
- Inconsistent policies — listings get pulled randomly, while dodgy ones stay up
- No DOA framework — dead-on-arrival disputes don't fit eBay's standard returns process
- Wrong audience — many eBay buyers lack marine experience, leading to avoidable problems
What a Specialist Platform Offers
- The right audience — buyers who understand acclimation, quarantine, and water parameters
- Livestock-specific features — proper species categories, not "fish > other"
- DOA protection — clear framework for dead-on-arrival situations
- Community reputation — feedback from other reefers carries real weight
- Better matching — listings reach people actively looking for marine fish with the setup to keep them
When eBay Still Makes Sense
For equipment — old skimmers, test kits, spare heaters — eBay's broad reach is genuinely useful. For livestock, a specialist platform is better suited.
List marine fish on a dedicated marketplace where buyers understand what they're getting and seller reputation as a fish keeper actually counts.
