Nano SPS Tanks: Is It Actually Possible?

SPS in a Nano Tank

Conventional wisdom says SPS and nano tanks do not mix. It is harder — but far from impossible. Plenty of UK reefers keep thriving SPS in tanks under 80 litres.

Why Nano SPS Is Challenging

Less water volume means parameters shift faster, temperature fluctuates more easily, evaporation has a bigger salinity impact, and there is less margin for dosing errors. None of these are insurmountable — they just require more diligence and good automation.

Recommended Setup

Tank: 40–80 litres minimum. Popular choices include the Red Sea MAX NANO and Waterbox 20.

Light: Something adjustable with good spectrum control. The AI Prime 16HD is a common choice for nanos at around £200.

Flow: Two small powerheads creating random flow. Aim for 20–40x turnover without creating a hurricane.

ATO (auto top-off): Essential in a nano. Evaporation can shift salinity dramatically in a single day. Basic units run £30–60.

Heater: A reliable heater with an external controller as a safety cutoff. A stuck-on heater can overheat a small tank dangerously fast.

The Dosing Challenge

Dosing amounts in a nano are tiny — millilitres per day. Options include manual dosing with a syringe, micro dosing pumps (like the Kamoer X1), all-in-one products, or simply frequent water changes — a 20% change twice a week replaces significant minerals in a small volume.

Best SPS for Nano Tanks

Species that stay compact and tolerate slight parameter wobbles:

  • Stylophora — compact growth, tough, gorgeous colours
  • Montipora digitata — can be pruned to stay small
  • Seriatopora (birdsnest) — delicate-looking but hardy, stays compact
  • Pocillopora — fast-growing but easy to frag for size control
  • Montipora capricornis — works with regular fragging to manage size
  • Acropora millepora — the most forgiving acro option for a nano

Maintenance Schedule

  • Daily: Check ATO reservoir, visual inspection, check temperature
  • Every 2–3 days: Test alkalinity
  • Weekly: 10–20% water change, clean glass, test calcium and magnesium
  • Monthly: Full parameter check, clean equipment, replace filter media

Each session is quick because the tank is small — water changes take minutes.

A nano SPS tank is like a bonsai reef — small, detailed, and intensely satisfying. Start with a couple of montis and a stylo, grab some frags from UK sellers, and build from there.
