Montipora Deserves More Respect
Montipora is often overlooked in favour of acropora, but montis are gorgeous, far more forgiving, and some colour morphs rival any acro. For anyone stepping into SPS for the first time, montipora is a strong starting point.
Why Montipora Suits SPS Beginners
Montis tolerate a wider range of parameters than acropora and handle minor alk swings that would stress an acro. They grow fast enough to provide visible progress, and come in plating, encrusting, and branching forms.
Common species:
- Montipora capricornis — the classic plating monti. Green, orange, red, purple — loads of colour morphs
- Montipora digitata — branching form in purple and green. Grows quickly into a lovely bush shape
- Montipora undata — scrolling/plating type with a ridged texture. Less common but worth seeking out
- Montipora setosa — fuzzy appearance from extended polyps. A unique look
Parameters
- Alkalinity: 7.5–9 dKH (wider range than acros can handle)
- Calcium: 400–440 ppm
- Magnesium: 1280–1350 ppm
- Nitrate: 2–15 ppm (they handle slightly higher nutrients)
- Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm
That range is why montis suit beginners — there is actual margin for error.
Placement and Flow
Light: 150–300 PAR for most montis. Plating varieties orient themselves towards the light source over time.
Flow: Moderate. Plating montis especially can trap debris on their flat surfaces, leading to tissue loss. Random flow from a wavemaker helps.
The One Big Montipora Problem
Montipora-eating nudibranchs — tiny white slugs that are nearly invisible and can devastate a colony. They leave small round bite marks and lay tiny spiral egg clusters.
Prevention: dip every new monti before it enters the tank, inspect closely with a magnifying glass, and quarantine if possible. Some wrasses (like a six-line) eat them, but prevention beats cure.
Where to Find Them
Montipora frags are generally well-priced at £15–30 from UK sellers. Check out SPS frags from the community. They ship well due to their hardiness.
