The Lighting Debate That Never Dies
LED vs T5 vs hybrid — one of the most argued topics in the hobby. Here's how the three options stack up.
T5 Fluorescent
T5 tubes produce a wide, even spread of light with no shadows, no dark spots, and no disco-ball shimmer. Every coral gets consistent coverage.
The good: Even light distribution, proven coral growth (especially SPS), bulb variety for spectrum tuning, and cheaper upfront (£80–150 for a 4-bulb fixture on a 90cm tank).
The not so good: Tubes lose intensity over 9–12 months (£40–80/year in replacements), higher heat output, more electricity draw (100–160W for a 4-tube setup), and no controllability — on or off only.
LEDs
LEDs are now the default choice for most new setups, and for good reason.
The good: Full programmability (sunrise, sunset, moonlight, acclimation schedules), energy efficiency (50–120W for a 200L tank), long lifespan without bulb changes, and gorgeous shimmer.
The not so good: Point-source LEDs create shadows and intensity gradients, uneven PAR requires more thoughtful coral placement, and quality reef LEDs cost £150–500+ per unit.
Hybrid
Hybrid fixtures combine LED and T5 in a single unit. The T5 tubes provide an even base layer while LEDs add controllability, shimmer, and supplemental intensity. Brilliant for SPS tanks, but budget £300–600+ and expect a bulkier fixture.
Quick Recommendations
Beginner or mixed reef? LED. The controllability alone makes life easier.
Serious SPS grower? Multiple LEDs or hybrid if budget allows.
Budget-conscious? A second-hand T5 fixture is still a perfectly valid choice.
Browse reef lights from UK sellers — the used market is great for lighting. LEDs barely degrade, and T5 fixtures last forever if the ballast is sound.
