The Budget Pumps Everyone Has an Opinion On
Mention Jebao or Jecod in any reef forum and two camps appear. Half swear by them — "ran Jebaos for five years, saved hundreds." The other half wouldn't touch them — "buy once cry once, spend the money on EcoTech."
So what's the reality?
The Naming Confusion
Jebao and Jecod are essentially the same company — or at least share manufacturing and designs. The same pump appears under both names with slightly different branding. If the model number matches, it's the same pump.
Popular Models
- Jebao DCP-5000 (return pump) — A popular choice for mid-sized systems. Quiet, controllable, around £50 versus £150–200+ for equivalent name-brand pumps
- Jebao SOW-8 (wavemaker) — WiFi control, multiple flow modes, decent build quality. A pair runs about £80 total versus £500+ for equivalent EcoTech setups
- Jebao DP-4 (dosing pump) — Four channels, around £55. Not as precise as a GHL or Kamoer, but perfectly adequate for most hobbyist dosing
The Pros
Price. Jebao pumps cost a third to a quarter of equivalent name-brand options. For a new reefer, the savings are enormous — money that could go toward better lighting, a proper skimmer, or more corals.
Performance. Modern Jebao pumps genuinely perform well. Flow rates are accurate, DC motors are efficient, and controllability is solid.
Improvement over time. The current generation — SOW, SLW, and DCP lines — is significantly better than older models. Tighter tolerances, better controllers, improved WiFi.
The Cons
Build quality isn't premium. The plastic feels cheaper, cables are thinner, controller housings are basic. It works, but the materials reflect the price point.
Controller reliability. The genuine weak point. Controller board failures do occur. The pump motor is usually fine, but the electronics can let things down.
Limited support. No UK service centre. Warranty claims go through the retailer, not the manufacturer.
WiFi can be flakey. The app works, mostly, but it drops connection sometimes and isn't as polished as EcoTech Mobius or AI MyAI.
Who Should Buy Jebao?
For reefers on a budget or setting up a first tank, Jebao is a strong choice. The savings can fund equipment that matters more. For expensive SPS-dominant systems where reliability is critical, consider spending more on the primary return pump and keeping Jebao for wavemakers where a failure is less catastrophic.
Browse new and used pumps from UK sellers — both Jebao and premium brands are regularly listed at good prices.
What's been your experience with Jebao or Jecod? Any models to recommend or avoid?
