The Wavemaker Everyone Lusts After
If Jebao is the sensible hatchback of reef pumps, EcoTech VorTech is the sports car. Everyone knows the name, everyone respects the engineering, and everyone winces at the price. But is the VorTech actually worth two to four times a budget alternative?
What Makes VorTech Different
Most wavemakers have the motor inside the tank — submerged in saltwater, generating heat, with a cable over the rim. The VorTech uses a magnetic coupling that puts just the impeller and housing inside the tank, with the motor on the outside of the glass.
This means no motor heat in the water, no visible power cable, easier servicing, and a thinner in-tank profile. It's clever engineering that makes conventional wavemakers feel clunky by comparison.
The Models
- MP10 — Suits tanks up to ~150L. About £200–250 new. Surprisingly powerful for its size
- MP40 — The workhorse most reefers buy. Handles 150–500L. One MP40 can replace two lesser wavemakers. About £300–400 new
- MP60 — For tanks 500L+ or high-flow SPS systems. £400–500+
All current models use QuietDrive technology, noticeably quieter than older wSE versions. When buying used, QD models are worth the premium.
The Mobius App
The software side is genuinely excellent — multiple flow modes (constant, pulse, random, tidal swell, nutrient transport, lagoon), feed mode, night mode, anti-sync for multiple pumps, and optional battery backup for power cuts.
Is It Worth It?
Yes, if: running SPS-dominant tanks where optimised flow matters, noise is a concern, battery backup is valued, or the system is a long-term build.
Maybe not, if: on a tight budget where the £300+ difference could fund better corals or lighting, running a softies/LPS tank, or still new to the hobby.
The corals don't know what brand of pump is moving water. The VorTech doesn't grow coral faster. What it offers is better flow programming, lower noise, less heat, cleaner aesthetics, and equipment built to last a decade.
Buying Used
VorTechs hold up extremely well and appear on the used market regularly. An MP40 that retailed for £350 often appears for £150–200 second-hand — at which point the value proposition changes completely.
Browse used EcoTech VorTech pumps from UK sellers — QD models especially are a brilliant used buy.
