DC vs AC Pumps: Why DC Is Taking Over the Reef Hobby

The Quiet Revolution in Reef Pumps

Ten years ago, almost every pump in the hobby was AC — plug it in, one speed, job done. Now the majority of pumps on the shelf are DC, and there are good reasons for the shift.

What's the Actual Difference?

AC pumps run straight from the mains at one fixed speed. Simple, robust, no controller needed.

DC pumps use a driver/controller that converts mains AC to low-voltage DC, allowing variable speed control. Want 50% flow? Dial it down. Feed mode? Press a button. Some have wave patterns, night modes, and app control.

Why DC Pumps Win for Most Reefers

  • Variable speed control. Buy slightly oversized and dial to exactly the right flow. Schedule lower flow at night or during feeding
  • Energy efficiency. A DC pump at 70% uses significantly less power than an AC pump at full blast with a ball valve restricting flow. Savings of £30–60 annually are typical
  • Quieter operation. DC pumps at reduced speed are noticeably quieter — important when the tank is in a living space
  • Soft start. Gradual ramp-up reduces water hammer and is gentler on internals
  • Feed mode. Most DC controllers drop flow temporarily so food doesn't blast into the overflow

When AC Still Makes Sense

  • Reliability. No controller board to fail — simpler mechanically. Still used in commercial settings
  • Cost. The cheapest AC pumps undercut the cheapest DC pumps
  • Backup pumps. A cheap AC pump as a backup return is sensible — plug and go, no controller needed

Popular DC Pumps in the UK

Return pumps: Jebao DCP (£30–70) · Sicce Syncra SDC (£100–170) · EcoTech Vectra (£200–400) Wavemakers: Jebao SOW/SLW (£30–60) · AI Nero (£100–180) · EcoTech VorTech (£200–400+) Dosing pumps: Jebao DP-4 (£50–80) · GHL Doser 2.1 (£200+)

The Controller Factor

A DC pump is only as good as its controller. If the controller board dies, the pump stops — unlike an AC pump which runs until the motor physically fails. Premium brands like EcoTech and Sicce have excellent controller reliability. Budget brands occasionally have failures, though recent generations have improved significantly.

Have you made the switch from AC to DC? What pump did you land on?
