Off the Shelf or Built to Order?
One of the bigger decisions when setting up a reef: buy a ready-made system from a major brand or commission a custom build. Both approaches have their place, and the right choice depends on the situation.
The Major Off-the-Shelf Brands in the UK
Red Sea Reefer Series
Probably the most popular reef-specific tank system in the UK. Clean rimless design, excellent overflow and plumbing, well-designed sump, and a cabinet that works in a living room.
Rough UK pricing: Reefer 170 (£800–1,000), Reefer 250 (£1,000–1,300), Reefer 350 (~£1,300–1,600), Reefer 425/525/625 XL (£1,600–3,000+).
Includes tank, cabinet, sump, plumbing, return pump, and overflow. Strong resale value.
Waterbox
Gaining serious ground in the UK. Ultra-clear glass as standard and thoughtful design. AIO series (£250–500), Reef series (£900–1,800), Peninsula (£1,200+). Slightly less established UK dealer network than Red Sea, but improving.
TMC (Tropical Marine Centre)
A UK company — better availability, easier warranty, UK-specific design. Generally 10–20% less than Red Sea for comparable sizes.
Other Brands
- Innovative Marine — great AIO tanks, especially the Nuvo series for nanos
- Fluval — Evo and Sea EVO are excellent budget AIO options (£150–250)
- D-D — UK company, Reef-Pro series, solid mid-range
Going Custom
When Custom Makes Sense
- Unusual spaces. Alcoves, specific wall dimensions, odd cabinet sizes — custom is the only way to get a perfect fit
- Peninsula or in-wall installations. Exact control over dimensions and viewing panels
- Very large tanks (500L+). Off-the-shelf options thin out and get expensive. Custom can be more cost-effective at scale
- Specific requirements. Particular overflow designs, extra drain holes, non-standard glass thickness
UK Custom Builders
- Aquarium Connections — Midlands-based, excellent reputation
- Aquariums4Life — custom glass and acrylic
- ND Aquatics — popular for custom builds and cabinets
Typical pricing: A custom 200L rimless starts around £300–500 for the tank alone. Full system with sump, cabinet, and plumbing runs roughly £700–1,300 — comparable to branded systems but built to exact specifications.
Custom Downsides
- No integrated design. Overflow, plumbing, sump sizing — all self-managed
- Warranty varies by builder, unlike manufacturer guarantees
- Resale is harder — non-standard sizes are tougher to sell
- Longer lead times — weeks vs days
General Guidance
For a first reef or a straightforward setup: off-the-shelf is the safer bet. Thousands of owners running the same system means plenty of community support. For experienced reefers who need a non-standard size: custom offers unbeatable flexibility.
Browse new and used reef tanks from UK sellers — Red Sea Reefers appear on the used market regularly and are fantastic value second-hand.
