Capable Reef LEDs for Under £150
The big brands price their units at £200–500+, but there are genuinely capable reef LEDs under £150 that grow corals perfectly well. A reef LED needs to produce sufficient PAR (100+ for softies, 200+ for SPS), include the right spectrum (heavy royal blue around 450nm), offer adjustable intensity, and manage heat properly.
The Budget Winners
Nicrew HyperReef (£80–140)
The go-to in the budget reef community. Solid PAR numbers, separate white and blue channels, built-in timer, and reasonable spread. UK reefers report growing SPS — not just softies — under these lights. Not as tuneable or even as premium options, but impressive for the price.
Mars Aqua (£60–100)
The original "black box" that proved cheap lights could grow corals. Two channels, decent power output, and a price that seems too low. Build quality is basic and fans can be noisy, but corals grow under them.
VIPARSPECTRA (£80–120)
Better build quality than the cheapest options, programmable timer, and decent spectrum. Newer models have improved UV/violet output for better coral fluorescence.
CREE DIY Builds (£50–150)
For those handy with a soldering iron, building a fixture from CREE or Bridgelux LED chips gives full control over spectrum, power, and spread at a fraction of commercial costs.
What You Give Up
Budget LEDs typically have more of a spotlight effect, fewer spectrum channels, louder fans, basic timers instead of app control, and limited warranty support.
The Smart Approach
A £100 LED dialled in properly with measured PAR readings will outperform a £400 light set up by guesswork. Consider renting a PAR meter or picking up a Seneye to verify light levels.
Browse reef lights from UK sellers — a used AI Prime at £120 is arguably a better buy than a new budget light at the same price, so check the second-hand market too.
