You Don't Need to Spend a Fortune on LPS

Designer torches for £300, rainbow acans at £50 per head, ultra-grade Trachyphyllia for £200+. It can seem like keeping corals requires a second mortgage. But some of the best, most beautiful LPS cost under £30 for a healthy frag.

Duncan Coral — £15–25

Three to five heads for about twenty quid. Feeds visibly, grows steadily, looks gorgeous under blue LEDs. In a year that becomes a proper colony.

Standard Hammer Coral — £20–30

A standard gold or green hammer for twenty-five quid delivers the same gorgeous flowing movement and satisfying feeding response as the designer varieties costing hundreds.

Acans (Standard Morphs) — £10–25

Standard red, red-and-green, or green acans — a three-head frag for £10–15. Under blue LEDs they pop just as nicely as the expensive morphs.

Blastomussa wellsi — £15–25

Three to four heads for under twenty pounds. Rich colours, easy care, doesn't need prime real estate. Stick it low-flow, low-light and it thrives.

Standard Frogspawn — £20–30

Standard green or purple frogspawn is affordable, hardy, and grows into a showpiece colony over time.

Favites / Favia — £10–20

Criminally underrated. A frag for £10–15 in lovely colours, rock-solid hardy, and surprisingly attractive once settled in.

Candy Cane Coral (Caulastrea) — £10–20

Branching LPS with round, puffy polyps. Beginner-friendly, grows well, and a nice colony has genuine presence.

Lobophyllia (Lobo Brain) — £15–25

Serious chunkiness for the tank. They inflate beautifully, respond well to feeding, and are hardy as anything.

How to Get the Best Deals

  • Buy from hobbyists. Fellow reefers selling frags are often cheaper than retail. Browse LPS from UK sellers on Reefsy
  • Look for multi-head frags. A 5-head Duncan for £25 beats a 2-head for £15
  • Don't chase names. "Ultra rainbow morph" is marketing. A healthy, well-coloured coral will look great regardless
  • Buy at frag swaps. UK frag swaps and reef meets are brilliant for deals
