The £60 Light That Divided the Hobby
Few topics generate more debate in reef keeping than "black box" LEDs — unbranded or lesser-known Chinese-manufactured LED panels selling for a fraction of premium prices. The hobby remains split between those who swear by them and those who think they're junk.
What Are Black Box LEDs?
Generic, rectangular, matte-black LED fixtures — typically around 165W — featuring rows of 3W LEDs with two control channels (white and blue) via manual dials. Modern budget LEDs from brands like Mars Aqua, PopBloom, and Viparspectra have evolved with better optics and quieter fans, but the core proposition remains: reef-capable lighting at a fraction of the premium price.
The Case For
- They grow corals. Symbiotic algae don't care whether photons come from a £400 Hydra or a £60 Amazon special. If PAR is sufficient and the spectrum includes royal blue around 450nm, photosynthesis happens. UK reefers report growing SPS under these lights.
- The price is transformative. For the cost of one AI Prime, two or three black boxes can light an entire 120cm tank.
- They're disposable. If one fails after two years, replacing it still costs less than a single premium unit.
- Decent PAR. A 165W black box at 20cm above the water produces 300+ PAR at centre — comfortably SPS territory.
The Case Against
- Spectrum quality. Cheaper LED chips with broader wavelength bins mean corals grow but often don't colour up as vibrantly as under premium lights.
- Uneven spread. Basic optics create a pronounced hotspot under the centre with rapid falloff at the edges.
- Fan noise. Loud fans are common. Replacing them with Noctua units (£10–15) is a popular mod.
- Shorter lifespan. 2–3 years typical vs 5–10 years for premium LEDs.
- Limited control. Two manual dials, no timer, no app. A separate plug timer is needed.
Where They Make Sense
Good for: Frag tanks, grow-out tanks, budget builds, first reef tanks, refugium lighting, backup lights.
Less ideal for: Living room display tanks, SPS colour enthusiasts, long-term setups where reliability matters, those wanting app control.
Browse reef lights from UK sellers — a used premium LED often costs the same as a new black box. A second-hand AI Prime at £80–100 gives premium spectrum, app control, and silent operation at budget prices.
