Everything in One Box (Almost)
For newcomers overwhelmed by sourcing a tank, sump, plumbing, overflow, return pump, and cabinet separately — an all-in-one tank simplifies everything. AIO tanks have a built-in rear filtration chamber that eliminates the need for a separate sump.
How AIO Tanks Work
Instead of an external sump, a section at the back of the tank is separated by internal walls. Water flows into filtration chambers for media, a heater, and a return pump. Benefits are clear:
- No external plumbing to leak
- No drilled tank or overflow box needed
- Compact footprint
- Genuinely a weekend setup project
The Best AIO Tanks in the UK
Fluval Evo / Sea Evo (52L) — ~£150–200
The classic entry point into reef keeping. Comes with a rear sump section, basic LED light (adequate for softies and some LPS), and return pump. The stock light typically gets upgraded within a year for coral growth — an AI Prime 16HD is the popular choice. Hard to beat at this price point.
Red Sea MAX Nano (75L) — ~£400–550
A significant step up. Comes with Red Sea's ReefLED light, which is genuinely SPS-capable. Higher build quality, better-proportioned rear sump. Cabinet sold separately (~£200–300). Widely considered the best AIO recommendation for beginners with the budget.
Waterbox AIO 20 (76L) / AIO 35 (133L) — ~£250–600
Arguably the best-looking AIO tanks on the market. Ultra-clear glass, clean lines, well-designed filtration. The AIO 35 at 133 litres offers genuine reef-keeping volume in AIO format. Tank only — no light or heater included, so total cost is higher but equipment choices are completely open.
Innovative Marine Nuvo 20 / Nuvo 40 (75L / 150L) — ~£200–500
Well-regarded for solid construction and sensible design. Good middle ground — reliable build quality and readily available accessories in the UK.
Common AIO Modifications
Most experienced reefers modify their AIO over time:
- Media basket replacement — custom baskets (InTank is popular) for better filter floss, carbon, and GFO control
- Return pump upgrade — a stronger pump (e.g. Sicce Syncra Silent) improves circulation
- Rear chamber refugium — a cheap grow LED and chaetomorpha for nutrient export
- ATO sensor — auto top-off is one of the best quality-of-life upgrades for any AIO
Honest Limitations
- Limited equipment space. Fitting a skimmer, heater, media, and pump in a shoebox-sized chamber is tight
- Noise. Water flowing over the rear wall can be audible — adjustable with water levels
- Upgrade path. Outgrowing an AIO means buying a completely new tank rather than just adding a sump
The AIO-to-Sump Pipeline
Most reefers who start with an AIO upgrade to a sump-based system within 2–3 years. That's not a failure — it's a natural progression. The good news: AIOs hold their resale value well because there's always someone just getting started.
Browse AIO tanks and complete reef setups from UK sellers — a used AIO with a light upgrade already done is arguably the best deal in reef keeping for a new starter.
