The Premium Reef LED Showdown

Anyone investing in a premium reef LED inevitably ends up comparing these three: AI Hydra, EcoTech Radion, and Kessil. All excellent, all expensive, and choosing between them drives people mad.

AI Hydra 64 HD (£350–450)

Eight distinct LED channels for granular spectrum control. The myAI app is clean and intuitive. A single unit covers roughly 60x60cm at coral-growing intensity — a 120cm tank needs two. Strong PAR output with solid aluminium housing and barely audible fan cooling.

Best for: Maximum spectrum control and the best app experience.

EcoTech Radion XR15 / XR30 (£300–700)

The XR30 has arguably the best spread of the three brands. The diffused lens option improves edge-to-edge coverage significantly, and PAR output is among the highest in the consumer reef LED market. Integrates with EcoTech's Mobius ecosystem for VorTech and Vectra pump control.

Best for: Best coverage per unit and highest PAR for demanding SPS.

Kessil A360X (£350–450)

A completely different approach — a dense LED matrix behind a single lens producing the most natural-looking shimmer of any reef LED. Coverage is narrower than competitors (roughly 60x45cm per unit), and spectrum control is simpler with two channels. The machined aluminium housing is completely silent with no fans.

Best for: Most natural shimmer and cleanest-looking fixture.

Quick Comparison

Feature AI Hydra 64 Radion XR30 Kessil A360X
Price per unit £350–450 £500–700 £350–450
Spectrum channels 8 8 2
Coverage per unit Good Best Narrowest
PAR output High Highest High (centre)
Shimmer quality Good Good Best
Noise Quiet fan Slight fan hum Silent

Corals will thrive under any of these if intensity and spectrum are set sensibly. The differences are in the details.

Browse reef lights from UK sellers — premium LEDs hold their value well, but a generation-old Hydra or Radion at 40% off retail is a solid way to get top-tier lighting.

Which of the big three are you running, and would you buy it again?
